Introduction

The House of Hope Foundation, Incorporated is a charitable institution established to shelter individuals who are mentally challenged. It is a custodial psychiatric care facility owned by the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro City, an apostolate under the Ad Extra Ministries. It is located at Upper Palalan, Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City.

The facility has two (2) wards, male and female, for manageable patients. It can accommodate  minimum of twenty two (22) patients and maximum of 30. We also have twenty (20) individual isolation cells. It has one (1) chapel, an administration building, a separate kitchen, two (2) big kiosks and living quarters for the Sisters and Staff.

The House of Hope, Foundation, Inc. is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission with License No. H19980465 as a non-profit charitable foundation governed by a Board of Trustees and administered by the Missionary Congregation of Mary (MCM).

House of Hope Foundation, Inc. is motivated and inspired by the Gospel of St. Matthew 25:35-36, “I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me...”

Institutional Background

Early in 1984, a group of advocates headed by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Jesus Tuquib, bonded themselves to form the apostolate known as the Tiunay nga Igsoon sa Gugma (TIG) and establish a shelter to serve as reformatory for drug dependents. After several years, the operation of the center was closed.

In 1990, the center was reopened under the directorship of Msgr. Rodulfo N. Roa, SSJV then succeeded by Msgr. Eutiquiano M. Legitamas, SSJV. The center was also managed by the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family (MSHF).

In 1997, The Missionary Congregation of Mary (MCM) sisters were invited by the Archbishop Jesus Tuquib, DD to administer House of Hope and Msgr. Cirilo Isnani, PC as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees until present.

For eleven years now, the facility has survived through God’s providence and the generosity of the benefactors. The one-hectare lot where the facility is presently situated was donated by the late Asuncion Hojas Vda. De Escaño. The Xavier University Community Health Care Center or the German Doctors provided medicines for free. Diagnosis and prescriptions were done by psychiatric doctors of Northern Mindanao Medical Center. The City Government of Cagayan de Oro City provided financial support since the administration of Mayor Pablo P. Magtajas, Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and the present Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula. Another source of support are donations from well to do families.

It is said “Water is the source of life” and on April 3, 2008 connection of water for House of Hope was made possible through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban under the leadership of their president Maria Victoria F. Abogado and financial help of Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula.

As of the record from June 26, 1997 to December 31, 2008, the institution has accommodated 1,186 patients coming from all over the Philippines including two foreigners from Singapore and USA.

The House of Hope Foundation, Inc. (HOHFI) Board of Trustees is composed of 9 members. The staff has fifteen volunteers; six registered nurses, three caregivers, two cooks, two drivers, one secretary, two MCM Sisters and a security guard.

HOHFI is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with license number H199800465 dated September 10, 1998 and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

HOHFI was also granted a License to Operate by the Department of health (DOH) as Custodial Psychiatric Care Facility last June 26,2012, License Number 10-001-12-38-CP-2 with 60 beds capacity.

HOHFI does not provide custodial care for abandoned patients. Their families remain responsible to provide care of them.  After patients are effectively managed and serious symptoms resolve, they are sent back to their homes with their families.
